You sit in a sound-treated room, wear headphones and press a button whenever you hear a tone at various frequencies.
What it can show
The degree and frequency pattern of hearing loss, and whether it is conductive or sensorineural.
What it cannot show
Does not give the cause. An audiogram describes; it does not diagnose.
This is the half people skip. A normal result answers one question, not every question.

Significant current tinnitus · recent ear infection · work in a noisy environment.
