How long
The procedure is usually short. Pathology results typically take several days to over a week.
Radiation
None, unless guided by CT.
Preparation
Depends on the site. Blood thinners almost always need reviewing beforehand, and fasting may be required.

What it can show

The cellular nature of a lesion. This is the step that gives certainty instead of inference from imaging.

What it cannot show

Represents only the exact spot sampled. A miss means a negative result still does not exclude — which is why a repeat biopsy is sometimes needed.

This is the half people skip. A normal result answers one question, not every question.

Tell the staff before you start

All blood thinners, aspirin and supplements · bleeding disorders · anaesthetic allergy · current antibiotics.

Also bring the full list of every medicine and supplement you take. Things bought without a prescription belong on that list too.
