Obstetrics and gynaecology OB-GYN
Pregnancy and birth, plus female reproductive health: periods, fibroids, endometriosis, menopause, fertility.
Who is usually sent here
Abnormal periods, lower abdominal pain, unusual bleeding, pregnancy, or cervical screening.
What this specialty does NOT cover
Bleeding after menopause is never normal, however slight — that is a reason to be seen soon, not to wait and see.
What a first visit usually involves
History, a pelvic examination and usually an ultrasound. You may ask for a chaperone during the examination.
Bring with you
Three to six months of cycle records, your most recent cervical screening result, and previous scans.
Worth asking
- When is my next screening due
- Which options fit my plans about children
- Which signs mean coming in immediately
