Proton pump inhibitors
Strongly reduce the amount of acid the stomach produces.
Why it gets prescribed
Commonly prescribed for reflux, ulcers, and to protect the stomach when other medicines are needed.
What to watch for
Very long-term use comes with periodic checks. Symptoms not settling after a course is a reason to be reviewed, not a reason to keep buying.
Stopping — read this before you stop anything
Stopping abruptly after long use can cause a temporary rebound of acid and worse symptoms — ask about tapering rather than stopping outright.
Tell the prescriber and the pharmacist
This group must be STOPPED before testing for H. pylori, or the result will be falsely negative. Ask the prescriber how many days — do not stop on your own.
Worth asking
- How long is this course
- When do I stop before an H. pylori test
- Is there any sign that warrants endoscopy
