Other directions, depending on what comes with it:

  • Endocrinology — with fatigue, cold intolerance or menstrual change
  • Haematology — with pallor and long-running tiredness

Not sure you have picked the right one? Start with general internal medicine — routing you to the right place is their job, not yours.

Go now, without waiting for an appointment, if any of these apply

  • Round, smooth patches appearing quickly
  • Hair loss with a red, sore or pus-filled scalp
  • Hair loss with weight loss and marked fatigue

This list is not exhaustive and does not replace judgement on the spot. If something is clearly wrong and you are unsure, call your local emergency number or go to the nearest facility — waiting in order to be certain is the most dangerous way to spend the time.

What you will be asked — have the answers ready

  • Whether it is even all over, in patches, or thinning at the crown
  • How long it has been going on
  • Whether two to three months earlier there was serious illness, surgery, childbirth or strict dieting
  • Whether anyone in the family went bald early
  • Which medicines you take

A first appointment is short. Having these answers ready is the cheapest way to avoid a second visit that exists only to supply information.

Bring with you

  • Photographs of your hair from six to twelve months ago for comparison
  • Recent blood results
  • A list of medicines and supplements

What a first visit usually involves

  • Examination of the scalp and hair roots
  • Blood tests for iron and thyroid if indicated
  • A discussion of care and of treatment options
