ACE inhibitors and ARBs
Relax blood vessels by acting on one of the body’s blood pressure regulating systems.
Why it gets prescribed
Commonly prescribed for high blood pressure, heart failure, and to protect the kidneys in some people with diabetes or kidney disease.
What to watch for
Kidney function and potassium are usually checked after starting or changing. A persistent dry cough is worth reporting, as it can relate to this group.
Stopping — read this before you stop anything
Do not stop because your blood pressure looks normal — it is usually normal BECAUSE of the medicine. Any stopping is a conversation with the prescriber.
Tell the prescriber and the pharmacist
Say immediately if you are pregnant or planning to be. Also mention anti-inflammatory painkillers, potassium supplements, and diuretics.
Worth asking
- How often must kidney function and potassium be rechecked
- Who do I report a dry cough to
- What is my blood pressure target
