How long
About an hour including preparation and recovery.
Radiation
None for the plain test; yes if combined with nuclear perfusion imaging.
Preparation
Wear clothes and shoes you can walk in. Ask beforehand whether any heart medication should be withheld. Eat lightly, not a full meal.

What it can show

How the heart responds when it has to work harder, and whether symptoms appear on exertion.

What it cannot show

A normal result does not entirely exclude coronary disease, and some people cannot exercise long enough for a conclusion.

This is the half people skip. A normal result answers one question, not every question.

Tell the staff before you start

Chest pain in recent days · severe breathlessness · knee or hip problems limiting walking · current medication.

Also bring the full list of every medicine and supplement you take. Things bought without a prescription belong on that list too.
