Health checks for men 60–69
Function and mobility are the main axis. Reviewing the medication list at this age often does more than adding another test.
Asked at every age, not just yours
- Blood pressure — the cheapest measurement and the one most often skipped
- Weight and waist, recorded over time rather than measured once
- A complete list of medicines and supplements, including anything bought without a prescription
- Any allergies you have had, to medicines and to anything else
- Family history, with the AGE at which relatives were affected — the age is the detail that shifts a schedule
🫀 Heart and metabolic
- Blood pressure, glucose, lipids
- Irregular heart rhythm
- Ask about abdominal aortic aneurysm if you smoked for many years
🎗️ Cancer screening
- Bowel screening
- PSA: keep weighing benefits and harms; the decision depends on overall health and your preferences
- A long-lasting cough or hoarseness in a former smoker
💉 Infection and vaccination
- Seasonal vaccination
- Shingles and pneumococcal vaccination when you reach the recommended group
- Any missing boosters
🦴 Bones, senses and mobility
- Falls risk, balance and muscle strength
- Vision including eye pressure, and hearing
- Walking ability and how far you get before stopping
🧠 Mental health and lifestyle
- Memory, if family notice a change
- Mood and isolation, particularly after retiring
- A full medication review
What changes this list for you
- Many years of smoking
- A previous fall, or a clear decline in walking
- Taking several medicines at once
Any one of these can move a starting point earlier or change how often something is repeated. That is a conversation to have, not something to work out alone.
Questions to take with you
- Which of my medicines could be stopped
- What should I do to keep strength and balance
- Which items are no longer worth doing at my age
