Faecal occult blood test
Also written: FIT / FOBT
What it measures
Detects very small amounts of blood in stool, invisible to the eye.
Why it is ordered
The most widely used bowel cancer screening test because it can be done at home. A positive result does NOT mean cancer — it is a signal to proceed to colonoscopy.
How to prepare
Modern FIT usually needs no dietary restriction. Do not sample during menstruation or while haemorrhoids are bleeding.
