Sensitivity and specificity: what it means

Sensitivity is the ability to detect people who have the condition; specificity is the ability to correctly clear those who do not.

No test is high in both at once; there is always a trade-off.
A highly sensitive test is used to SCREEN — a negative is more reassuring. A highly specific test is used to CONFIRM — a positive is more trustworthy.
That is why an abnormal screening result is usually confirmed by a different test.
